Gracie is now fourteen, i believe. I don't recall our educational system teaching the most rudimentary basics of agriculture to small town and rural kids--who already knew--nor urban kids who didn't care and had no useful application for the information.

Gracie is, of course, of about the right age for 4H, if she were the resident of a small town. That's where farm children get involved in hands-on livestock production. They cherish and raise a calf, for example, into a full-grown steer, which is then sold off for steaks and hamburger.

I and my contemporaries knew where milk comes from when we were around 3 or 4.

Not everybody is as brilliant as you are.

And, since you obviously are, is that any reason to put others down who may not know everything?

@contrex,
Different time and place. Kids now have technology to master at that age. Sesame street or parents might mention in passing that cows give milk. They usually don't describe the hows and whys. At some point everyone figures it out.
I've seen farm kids who couldn't order off a menu. They'd never been in a restaurant and didn't understand the protocol. I try not to judge kids, after all they're kids... not miserable old know-it-alls..

@GracieGirl,
Cows are mammals just like we are. They breast feed their young. The mammary glands (boobs) of all female mammals produce milk at the time of birth. I'm not sure how long ago humans started drinking milk from other mammal species, but I'd guess it goes back to a time when women often died in childbirth. There weren't always wet nurses (other women who had recently given birth and could suckle the young) around so some enterprising person attempted to keep the baby alive by giving it milk from another mammal. It worked just fine. You can find lots of cheeses in the grocery store made from milk of all sorts of mammals.

The domestication of animals goes back at least ten thousand years.

I want a cow!

In Mongolia, the most important animals they have are horses. So, they drink mare milk.

They would also make an alcholic drink out of it, and would mix it with the horses blood to make an extra nourishing drink. Or they would drink the blood straight.

They care for their horses very very well. They couldn't exist without them.

I find the Mongolian culture very interesting

@chai2,
Alcoholic milk - and mixed with blood, no less.

I also find that an interesting culture.

I apologise if people thought I was being a know-all. I just found it very surprising that anybody would reach an age where they could write a clear post without knowing where milk comes from. An awful lot of milk packaging and advertising features pictures of cows and the idea of milking a cow is very very widespread, but oh well.

@contrex,
Nope, I didnt.
Fourteen.
Are you calling me stupid? Did you learn about cow boobs at school in your country? Maybe they should've spent more time teaching you something else, like, I dont know, manners.

Go be a jerk somewhere else.

I knew then where milk comes from, I know now where milk comes from, I will know in the future where milk comes from. Milk didn't come from a different place years ago from where it comes now. And it's an 'udder' with two letter 'd's. Genius.
