Chat Room

Reply Mon 16 Feb, 2004 03:36 am
It's pretty damn late and I was perusing the topics around A2K when I saw something that caught my eye. It was a little speck at first and slowly got larger and larger. Big, blue letters parading in front of my eyes saying, "Hey, never knew we were here, did you?"

Since when is there a chat room on this site?
Does anybody actually use it?

Oh wow, that's a rip off... You have to pay in order to chat with people, when the point of the threads are to...what?

"I don't use the threads to chat, it's a way to play virtual answering machine tag."
"I use my threads to spew random words into cyberspace, what do you use it for?"

Individual- How's that? We are getting a great forum for FREE. If a member wants some enhanced services, there is a charge. No one is forcing anybody to pay for the chat room.

I'm saying that it's odd that we have to pay to use a chat room, when we can chat (a tad slower) in a thread.

Well, a chat room IS more immediate. You can tell people that you will be on at a certain time, and they can meet you there. To me, it is a totally different experience than a froum format.

look at it like this:
a. in a regular topic - it's down for all time (well a2k is here) and you are accountable to the public

b. chat zone - it's virtual - only people going to remember are those in the Chat - unless they print or save to a file

so - if you want to be forgotten - you have to pay to play -

Chat rooms use a lot of system resources and only benefit the people who are there at the time (because their messages do not last.

The limitation on the chat room is to preserve the resources we need for the forums.

Most people who subscribe do not do so for the chat room. That is little more than an afterthought. Most do so to help support the free forums.

If it weren't for the members who supported A2K during a period in which I couldn't pay for it there might not be any site at all.

So in a way, you can say that it's helping to keep A2K free for everyone else.

I might open a free chat room for A2K members, but it will be offsite so that server load can be managed.

I should definitely donate to the site...later. I'll pay the McDonald's kids first, then deal with those who are suffering less.

On a very memorable occasion, the chat room did NOT forget.

I left some very rude words in there, as a joke, because a bunch of folk said they were coming there to chat, but 'twas all deserted.

Poor Letty came in later, and found my very rude words - and was very shocked.

Strangely, despite having known me for some time, she thought I was a wespectable wabbit.

I am unsure if she has ever recovered....

I WOULD (and do) pay to be forgotten....
