Just to finish off this thread....the microwave finally fell victim to my combined aesthetic sense (it was too big and too white) and desire to sell the house (need to declutter benches and get rid of things that are too big and too white...the big white toaster is hanging on by a thread, largely because it is concealable and because it has done sterling service lo these twenty years, having been bought to match my previous all white kitchen.)

Actually, the microwave is off on new adventures. We put it out on the footpath for the rubbish scavengers and they took it! I was somewhat surprised as used appliances seem to be left orphaned while other, more delectable rubbish is adopted.
