@edgarblythe,

From Simons greatest Album (IMHO) and here teamed up with Miriam Makeba to sing a song that became an anthem of human evolution while I was in the middle of a teaching career

Herb Reed, the last surviving member of The Platters original line-up, has died. They had a number one hit in 1955 with this song . . .

@Setanta,
Bummer about Herb Reed's passing.

The Platters were far more than a 1-hit wonder group.

"Only You (and You Alone)" and "The Great Pretender were big hits. Then there's "I'm Sorry" , "He's Mine", "Enchanted" and "The Magic Touch". They covered and made hits again out of "My Prayer", "Twilight Time", "Harbor Lights", "To Each His Own", "If I Didn't Care" and Jerome Kern's "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes".

@Ragman,
An obit i heard on the radio said they recorded more than 400 songs, and charted with 40 of them.

@Setanta,
Oh, OK. I was just clarifying in case someone might think they had only a single number one hit. When early in their Platter-dom career, when Herb Reed was the lead singer in the mid'-50s they first had those 3 ('Only You' and 'The Great Pretender' and 'Smoke Gets in Your Eyes').

Hasn't anybody mentioned, "Old Blue Eyes?" Sinatra had multiple incarnations, with careers extending from the 1940s until the 1990s. This is one of my favorites:

It's a bit disturbing to be listening to songs to sixteen year old girls at age 70, but I still love these old songs.
