@Letty,
((((((((((((((((((((((((Letty))))))))))))))))))))))))))))
@Letty,
They cut it down? or pruned? (I would be livid and hurt too.)
@sozobe,
The only good thing I can think of to say on this is that perhaps there will be some visits, and at the same time(s) you can meet some Carolina a2kers.
@Thomas,
I agree about that law! I'm still in touch with Jack's family but yeah, there's just no substitute for in-person regular contact.
dlowan, my friend is talking about insisting on a house with a good guest room so people can visit often. Also both sets of her kids' grandparents are here (not Columbus but nearby in Ohio) so they'll be back to visit for holidays, etc. We already are pretty emaily and Facebooky so hopefully that will continue.
She's pretty upset herself so I'm trying to get over my own personal upset so I can be better support for her. Very much a decision borne out of necessity rather than preference, she loves it here. Her kids are taking it very hard.
<heavy sigh>
Letty, that also sucks. Sorry about the bilking and the rose bush.
@ossobuco,
Oh good point about NC A2K'ers.
Remind me who -- bpb and squinney, right? LiontamerX?
I ask because I also want to help her out with insider info if possible -- she knows one person there but doesn't know much about the area.
@sozobe,
seed is down there right now, too...
Thinking of heating bills.
Grrrrrr.....
My stupid back made me grimace and grit today.
Yesterday, the lift went out where we see clients, and we had to climb to the fourth floor.
No problem, you'd think?
Except, since I prolapsed my stupid disk 6 months ago, climbing stairs has been,. for some reason, very painful and difficult.
So...my back was extremely sore last night after the climbs up and down...and this morning remains very sore. Now...this scares the hell out of me, especially when I get the referred pain down my leg, as this was a precursor to the thing prolapsing itself last5 time!
So...this morning, I am due to drive a long way speak with a bunch of school support workers (teacher aides they might be known as in some places ?) who are supporting some very traumatised kids I am working with in that school.
Driving any distance is a guaranteed way to stuff up my back if it is threatening to develop a major problem, so I very reluctantly called to cancel, thinking it was the same as the l;ast time I did it....where we reflected on how things were going, and I helped them to make sense of and think of how to respond to, the behaviours in the light of the neuro-biology of the kids. Kind of like a group supervision session, I suppose. Very informal and immediate.
I discovered that the school had decided it was a formal training, and they were bringing in numbers of folk especially for it!!!!
Now....while this was not what I had arranged and expected, and not what I prepared for (so I guess you could argue the back thing was a bit of a blessing in disguise!) I could likely have "winged it"" I guess...and I had available a very good handout.
So...we did the to and fro-ing thing:
Me...Oh no! You were having a bunch of people coming in especially!! Dammit, I'll come!
Kind sympathetic reception person, who has had a disk prolapse herself: No way!!! Ït's no trouble to call them, I'll do it right away!!
So...now I feel really sore and really guilty!!
@dlowan,
Oh thank goodness.
I read that and really really worried it would end up with you driving down there.
I'm so glad you didn't.
Very sensible of you... don't feel guilty in the least. They sprung it on you, and your back sprung the wonkiness on you. And it would cause a whole lot more problems for a whole lot more people if you go and then your back goes.
Watching CNN and the earthquake coverage. Gridlock at the airport...supplies stacked up but not being delivered. Sanjay went to the airport to see why...he asked for some supplies and they gave them to him! Yesterday he reported that amputations are being done without anesthesia (most of the amputees are women since they were probably at home and inside when the quake hit). He said life-saving medicines are stacked up at the airport, yet people are dying from the lack of them. Same with food and water.
Feeling helpless.
School lets out at 2:15 and students are in and out of the building for a while after that. There are sports and clubs and choral rehearsals, etc. I was talking to the math teacher and looked out the window where I saw a dog running in the main parking lot. It was chasing an SUV. The SUV went around the bus circle and back to the exit where he u-turned around in the narrow way, all the while the dog was chasing. He started driving towards the circle again, nearly running the dog over (me and the math teacher both gasped fearing the worst). He made that loop three times, nearly hitting the dog each time, with people coming into the lot, teachers heading out to their cars.
And then he stopped to let his dog into the car because there was a school bus coming.
I felt like jumping out the window and chasing the idiot down myself. All kinds of stoopid!
Those effin' Supreme Court judges handing corporations this country on a silver platter. Can democracy exist in such an environment? I just don't think so.

Democracy can
ONLY exist in the presence of special interest groups to spy on the politicians
and report to their members so that the politicians will be afraid
to run the country and will
DO what the citizens
TELL them to do,
on pain of getting fired at the next election.
We gotta
DEFEND and
SUPPORT our special interest groups.

Forget the guilty part. Absolutely no need for it as you've described things.
Concentrate on that problem back. That is the important thing right now.
So how are you feeling this afternoon? Any improvement?
@dlowan,
I don't want my smokin' bunny to be in pain. Waaaah.
Don't feel guilty. You did the right thing for you. You gotta come first.
I volunteer to feel guilty for you. I'm used to it.
@msolga,
Well.....because work wasn't expecting me early, I decided to take some pain-killers and wait for them to take effect before going in. (SHORT drive.)
Anyhoo, I went to sleep after showering.
I woke up at nine-thirty when my cleaners walked in on me when I was sleeping stark nekkid on the sofa in the study!!!! And one of them is a man!!!
@dlowan,
Whoa!!
(So then what did you do/say?)
@ossobuco,
"Well I guess you won't be needing a tip then."
