Looking at a plate tectonics world map, it seems that plates are converging on Africa from both East and West, with no area of subduction between. How can this be? Where is the crustal material going?
@mChafford ,
The Mediterranean Mountains--
@mChafford ,
Either up or down, there's nowhere else to go.
@mChafford ,
Which map are you looking at?

Hasn't that been going on for billions of years?

True, but the spreading ridge in the Indian Ocean must be pushing Africa from the other side.
@mChafford ,
You might find this page at the USGS of interest. Scroll down the page and you'll find info on the various plate actions around Africa.

@Butrflynet,
Thanks Butrflynet,
Looks like there is a lot of good, up to date info there. All I need now is time to study it.
