The sentence:
Studies have found that the level of thymidine in tumors and liver is higher than that in normal healthy tissue.

Thus we have a new sentence:

Studies have found that thymidine in tumors and liver is higher than that in normal healthy tissue.

This new sentence has the same meaning?

No, the amount of or measurement of the thymidine is important.
