@tanguatlay,
The sentences do not sound at all natural, Ms Tan. On what do you base your idea that #1 is the correct one?

Yes, unless there are 2 questions:
Where is John ?

Who was waiting for me ?

He's out in the kitchen. Nobody expects the Spanish Inquisition.

Thanks, JTT.

I agree that the sentences are not natural. The sentences are written by a non-native.

I think it should be #1 because who was waiting for me is a non-defining clause.

Does that mean
that there was NO Spanish Inquisition,
because only what is EXPECTED can happen ??????????

@tanguatlay,
Hi JTT

Could I know whether I am correct in my explanation?

Thanks.

@tanguatlay,
1. Where is John, who was waiting for me?

2. Where is John who was waiting for me?

Situation #1 - Ms Tan knows one John and I [jtt] know that to be fact.

1. Where is John, who was waiting for me?

This is a non-defining clause.

Situation #2 - Ms Tan knows two fellows by the name of John and I [jtt] know that to be fact, that she knows two fellows named John.

What I don't know at this point in 2. "Where is John" is which John you are referring to.

With the addition of "who was waiting for me", it becomes clear to me, because of some previous knowledge.

In this case, is the underlined a defining clause?

That would have been a first, MJ, but no cigar for Tico this time.
