If your brain is not damaged or diseased then all you've got to do is get out of your own way. My guess is that much unhappiness has to do with our neurotic desires, especially those characteristic of ambition, greed and envy.

@coolcubed,
Strange thing for man of Einstein's stature to say. I should think that being right
would be his most important goal.

To me, happiness means good health, good food, uninterrupted sleep, reliable car, no money worries, all my needs satisfied, and interesting new projects.

Add good sex to the list, and it's also my definition of happiness. I'm sure most people share a similar definition of happiness.

Unfortunately, I have never met anyone who is totally happy, because those with money might not have good health or a satisfying romantic relationship, or those with great relationships have financial troubles, or those with both money and love have bad health, and so on.

Only very few people get to have all the basic needs: Money, food, health, and love/sex.

@Rickoshay75,
A quarter, each time I drop it into the cup of the homeless and hear "Thank you! my man," from behind me as I walk toward the rest of my day.
