Recent technology stories from NYTimes: chip makers doing well, Dell selling well in Asia, IBM making bold moves, tech stocks active; yet PC manufacturers furloughing workers.

Some of the big PC manufacturers made the mistake of putting proprietary features in their machines. The word is out; computers built by tiny companies are cheaper, and less frustrating to up grade (and repair) and many of them get the job done as well as computers from the big manufacturers at about the same inital price. Does anyone know? have most of the big manufactures stopped most of the proprietary nonesence? My 6 year old 233 megahertz computer built by a local geek still performs well on ablle2know, www.answers.google.com and www.abuzz.com Neil
