Gingrich promises US moon colony by 2020

http://firstread.msnbc.msn.com/_news/2012/01/25/10237875-gingrich-promises-us-moon-colony-by-2020

Quote:
"At one point early in my career I introduced the northwest ordinance for space and I said when we got -- I think the number is 13,000 -- when we have 13,000 Americans living on the moon they can petition to become a state," Gingrich said,

Is this doable by 2020?
Can he pay for it without raising taxes?

@parados,
Yes its doable, and maybe he can do it without raising taxes. Either way, its something that should have been done tmyears ago.

@mysteryman,
I'm sure you could do this via investments I'd imagine alot of people would like to invest in such a venture.

@parados,

Help me Obama, would the moon become the 58th or 59th state?

@H2O MAN,
If you read the article you'll see only the "permanent settlement" part is said to be possible by 2020 (which it is, now that water has been found on the Moon) and not a settlement of over 130,000 people - trust Parados to conflate 2 distinct ideas. How to spell "loony" is something he should know, though!

Hes just trying his hand at recalling the clssic root (or Rut-e) for someone who is a lunatic. Anyway, Ive seen the word luny as a perfectly acceptable option to loony or looney.

Just today I found out the etymology of the phrase "ALL NINE YARDS"

I suspect he does know how to spell loony . . . which refers to someone who behaves like a particular water fowl, as opposed to a reference to the earth's satellite.

@farmerman,
Well I'm glad to see you concerning that water on the Moon - is it easily accessible? Some of it is supposed to be liquid already, the rest frozen. And the Moon has some gravity, unlike the space station, so humans won't see their bones crumble to dust as happens after a few months now.

And lots of people involved in space programs (not just Gingrich) are worried sick about our dependence on the Russian heavy lift rockets. The space shuttle program was never very effective, but the space station is vital. What happened to US rockets? I remember the USAF had plenty of heavy lift ones, where are they?

@High Seas,
all I know is what I read. Water is held in solid solution as hydrates , in xl lattices and as frozen crystal duff in polar craters. Ivve never seen any estimates (or if I have, Ive forgeotten the amounts).

Luny and lunar are contrasted, not conflated. Spendius would have got the references but then he's read The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman

Do you always argue with dictionaries that give multiple spellings? Colour your world a little more often HS.

It seems Romney, in the debate last night, told Gingrich he would be fired if he brought that idea to a CEO of a company.

"That idea" being spending 100 billion to put a colony on the moon by 2020.

@parados,
The head of the Nasa has said Barack Obama told him to make "reaching out to the Muslim world" one of the space agency's top priorities.

@joefromchicago,
Thanks Joe, I'd like to watch it later as right now my firewall won't let me access it - btw, amazing that anyone made a documentary within 24 hours of Newt Gingrich's speech in Florida!

He doesn't advocate an "expedition" though, he'd like to see a permanently inhabited station on the Moon (like the current space station) and financed in much the same way, by several technologically advanced nations joining together.
