Has any action been taken to identify and/or punish the Greek leaders who falsified Greek economic statistics in order to enter the EU? Are any of them still working for the government?

@gollum,
Greece joined the EU in 1981 (then called EC - the EU was formally established when the Maastricht Treaty came into force in 1993).

Before becoming a member, they started as early as in 1975 with the application procedure.

I don't think that "economic statistics" were really a big issues 40 years ago, during those 6 years between 1975 and 1981 - democracy has been more the topic after the rule of the Regime of the Colonels.

I'm sure that you easily can identify the politicians of the Metapolitefsi-era and the following period until 1981 - most, if not all are dead by now.

@Walter Hinteler,
Well, I searched a bit:

The European Community's first reaction to the Greek application was initially expressed by the European Commission, which, according to article 237 (at the time) of the Treaty of Rome, had to state its "opinion" on the country's application for accession to the Community.
The Commission published its "opinion" on January 28, 1976.
It proposed the institutionalization of a pre-accession transition period before full institutional integration, in order for the necessary economic reforms to take place but said as well that a "clearly positive response" should be given to Greece's request for accession.

Especially due to the pressure of Germany (and France) more accession negotiations were initiated in July 1976 and brought to a conclusion in May 1979.
Finally, on 1 January 1981 Greece becomes 10th member of European Community.

All EC-members became automatically EU-members with signing/ratifying the Rome Treaty (as well as the Maastrich Treaty respectively Lisbon Treaty years later).

@Walter Hinteler,
Thank you.

How about identification and punishment of the Greek officials who in subsequent years falsified financial figures on Greece's submissions to the EC/EU?
