big swordfish like that are getting really rare. Via fishing pressure, its been determined that swordfish of specific ages (measured by the rings on their scales) are averaging about 30% smaller than they were 40 years ago.
They breed fairly quickly and in large numbers , so theyve been selected, mostly by fishing pressure, for smaller and smaller sizes . EVolution via unnatural selection, in action.

Incidentally, shooting yourself in the head can also be dangerous, in some instances. Go figure.

I'm still amazed that jumping into a frenzy of attacking pseudorcas and a swordfish is at all dangerous. Mind boggling.

In all seriousness - it is an unfortunate incident. However, lets not kid ourselves into thinking it is half as bizarre as it is being portrayed as.

I take it they (the whales) do not eat seals, otherwise I would have thought they might have caused more harm to the intrepid researcher than the swordfish did - especially if they are peeved - as one would expect - by this "false" killer whale nonsense - where do we get off calling perfectly reasonable animals false something or other? Honestly.

when asked why he jumped into a shark feeding frenzy, lying in the hospital bed recuperating from numerous shark bites, mr. ed replied "i did it for the halibut". Rolling Eyes

Its a sad turn of events however, my mind works in this way (which is why after years of wanting to be a Marine Biologist ---Im not):

Animals in the water
You go in the water

Animals are apt to eat/attack/just plain hurt you in some way

Pretty simple actually.

Still, an interesting and educational story pueo...thanks Smile
