Media resin in Rain Soft

I have a Rain Soft water softener system. 2 resin tanks. Man. date of Jan 01'. I am wondering what type of resin to purchase and how much? The size of the tanks appear to be 8 3/4 by 44 inches. Can I replace the resin? I was told by a factory repair person that sales/repairs Rain Soft and they said that I have to return the units, and they give me new units?
