20 odd years ago I bought a large timber home in disrepair, I found out that it had been moved originally from a large property that was being sub divided and it was originally a home stead built about 120 years previously, this home had verandahs all round and was elevated on timber stumps.
I proceeded a 'do it yourself' interior rebuild whilst we lived there with our 3 children, some time into the renovation, my wife who was home alone at the time, heard loud footsteps walking around the wooden floored verandah, from the front of the house, to the rear. On going to the rear kitchen door, she found the footsteps ceased, and there was no one there. I told her it was her imagination , until it was repeated with me, then my youngest son, in all instances we were alone on these occasions. once the home was finished the footsteps ceased. could anyone explain what it could have meant.

Hmmm... I'm not sure, but I'm looking forward to seeing the responses from others.

This would surely have given me the creeps.

Welcome to A2K :-)

something like that is likely to give anyone the creeps...and everyone knows that when we're alone we're more susceptible to the old chills down the spine.
i dont know if i believe in ghosts, although i accept that the nature of the phenomenon means that its pretty much impossible to prove per se

Ok, lightfoot. Let's take a stab at it. Whoever was tromping around the veranda, was an overseer monitoring your project. When the footsteps ceased, it meant your renovations met with his approval.

Hey, that may not be too far awry. Welcome to A2K.

I worked in a florist shop once and I did the accounting and office work mostly in the basement of the shop. We had, as the staff claimed, a spirit in the basement and I met 'it' almost daily. I shared the basement with several other people and it became almost ordinary to find things moved around, a coldness on occasion (contributed to 'it' passing by us) and some other not-very-disturbing things. The first time something strange happened I nearly wet myself but whatever it was it did not seem angry or threatening in any way. The other staff were so accustomed to it that I soon shrugged and accepted the little weird things that would happen. The management never had it investigated but we often wondered what it was and if it was really a spirit of some kind or something else going on. I used to smoke in work back then (YEARS AGO!) and I would find my ashtray missing or when I'd light up a breeze would put out the match, so I assumed 'it' was trying to get me to stop smoking. I'm pretty open-minded about stuff like this. I am dubious of claims but not closed off to the idea that there are forces we don't completely understand.

Sorry, didn't mean to scare you.

But seriously, lightfoot, there are thousands of stories circulating about "ghost footsteps" I'm not denying that you and your family heard them, it's just that if you're looking for an explanation I'm afraid you're out of luck.

I haven't heard of a plausible one yet.

Chalk it up as the house settling..... and let it go.

Let it go, Gus? Don't you realize that this is the stuff that castles were built for?

True story. In our ancestral home in Virginia, there is one bedroom that has been referred to as the "ghost" room. When my kids were little, they decided to hold a ghost watch in that room with candles and such. In the middle of their watch, all of the shades at the windows flew up with a loud and attention-getting rattle. Needless to say, our young ghost busters made a clamor that outdid the shades. My son's face was slightly green, and his hair truly was standing on edge, in galvanic skin response.

We had a ghost room. We used it for storage because it was always so cold in there.
