Is this the beginning of the end of Rupert Murdoch's media empire?

Analysis: Murdoch's newspaper crisis causes jitters in U.S.:
Quote:
[...]"I think the UK hacking scandal has the potential to damage the Wall Street Journal's reputation," said Jay Ottaway, whose family owned 6.2 percent of Wall Street Journal publisher Dow Jones & Co before it was sold to News Corp.

"However, I think it would be unfair since the quality of the people and reporting at the Wall Street Journal is much higher (than) at other News Corp newspapers and television properties," he told Reuters by email. The Ottaway family had voted against the sale of Dow Jones to Murdoch.

Beyond fears about contaminating the brand of one of the most-respected newspapers in the United States, the controversy could also taint Murdoch's broader media business in the United States, which ranges from print to television to films.

Three U.S. lawmakers on Wednesday urged the Department of Justice and the Securities and Exchange Commission to look into whether News Corp broke a U.S. law banning payment of bribes to foreign officials.

And some media pundits, including CourtTV founder Steve Brill, have raised questions over whether News Corp's U.S. broadcast license could be revoked, given that federal communications law requires owners of TV stations to be "of good character."[...]

when push comes to shove Murdoch will find out that he has few friends, he has over his lifetime managed to rub most everyone the wrong way. And at least in American we get our jollies out of bringing down the rich and the powerful when we decided that they have gotten too big for their britches....Murdoch is there.

@hawkeye10,
I'll believe it when Fox News disappears from the airwaves and internet.

I think those who love Fox News feel allegiance to Roger Ailes, not to Murdoch.

Why rely on the news reports when you can just decide it means something else entirely?

One reporter and one editor characterized the move to work Murdoch over as bipartisan, but when I look at the names of those in Congress who have put their name to the effort I see mostly Dems. I did not just fall off of the turnip truck, unlike some people I dont believe everything I read, and I dont have a lot of faith in modern day "journalists" to either call the play straight or to have enough smarts to know what the **** they are talking about. When and if I starting seeing a lot of Repubs calling for go after Murdoch THEN I will agree that the effort is from both parties.

You're probably more of a Carpenters than a Gorillaz fan. So here's one for you, 'We've only just begun...'

You seem to think this story started in the last few weeks. It didn't, it started five years ago. At the beginning it was all put down as the actions of one rogue journalist. The only voices saying otherwise were the Guardian and a couple of labour MPs. Dave Cameron employed Andy Coulson, who was NOtW editor at the time, as his communications director in Downing Street.

Now, a commons motion condemning NI's takeover was passed without vote. There will be an enquiry which will force witnesses to testify under oath. Murdoch may have to give up the shares in BSkyB he already owns. There are new revelations every day. It's coming to a town near you.

The investigation into the 9/11 victims phone hacking may be little more than a fishing trip at present. If NI tapped the phones of Millie Dowler, soldiers killed in Afghanistan, victims of Soham murders, and 7/7 you can be sure they wouldn't flinch from the victims of 9/11. The question is how well have they covered their tracks. Even if nothing can be proven about 9/11, there's enough that's been done over here re bribing police to attract heavy fines in America.

I've been following this story for five years, you should try getting up to speed before you start spouting a load of old bollocks. Now here's Murdoc

@hawkeye10,
You might not have just fallen off the turnip truck but you seem to have been run over by one.

It's hardly One reporter and one editor...

Peter King (R-NY)
, a frequent guest on News Corp’s cable news properties (up to this point), just called for an FBI investigation into allegations that the company hacked into the voicemail accounts of 9-11 victims. Given King’s constant invocation of 9-11, only rivaled by Rudy Giuliani, this isn’t all that surprising.

Yesterday it was Senator Rockefeller as well as Bush's former SEC chairman calling for an investigation.

@hawkeye10,
Dude, you're right that it's going to be mostly D's calling for Fox to be investigated. I don't know why this is even in question; Fox is their natural enemy. It's to be expected.

@Cycloptichorn,
Wow, things are moving very fast, Cyclo!
Sort of a media domino affect, spreading from country to country ...

For those who doubt that Fox News devotees mightn't feel too concerned about Murdoch's activities in the US ....
If (as rumoured) the phones of 9/11 victims were bugged (& the details published), they might become just as outraged as the British people were to the exposure of similar NOTW activities..

No time to comment further just now, but I'm wondering what dramatic developments could occur today.

He's not the target. It's the organization he's built up - a conservative and big-business advocacy organization that masquerades as a news service - that is the target. An organization that lives by lying and misleading, that is corrupt up and down, and regularly commits crimes, it seems. A group who went to court to defend their ability to lie on air, and to fire their people for refusing lie on air.
