When I try to connect to my internet at home with my new smart phone, my computer shows up on the phone, but it shows a lock and won't let me access my internet. I'm running windows xp and I have no idea how to go about unlocking my network or whatever it is that needs unlocking and I was hoping someone could help a poor girl out.
What is showing up on your phone is the signal your router is broadcasting. Any wireless capable device within range of your router will see that broadcast. Your phone shows a lock because access to the internet from your router is password protected. If your computer is using this connection, the password was used for access. That same password must be entered in to your phone.
It's been a while since I've used XP but try this (I use Windows7):
On your
computer, point your mouse to the bottom right of your screen to your taskbar. Click the "Internet access" icon. Right-click
your Network. Select "Properties". There should be a text field called something like "Network security key" with the text hidden. Select the "Show charactors" checkbox. This should reveal the password in the security key tex field.
On your
phone, you should be able to select your network (from whatever screen was showing it) and then be given the option to enter the password that you just found on your computer.
