Hello, I just moved into a new house that has a water softener and was wondering when I am supposed to add salt. I have never lived in a house that had one so I am new to the whole process. Also there is a small black box next to the softener that has this black stuff in it and the box says oxidizer on the top. What is it lol. I have no idea on how any of this works. Thanks!

Ok I just went and poked around in the brine tank and there is a submerged salt block. After reading online I read that certain systems are set up to use salt blocks and keep the water level so the block is submerged. When it is time to add another block do I just plop it in? Also, I still can't figure out what the black box is with the word oxidizer on it.
