Most water softening systems have a hard water refill to the salt tank. So any iron in the water, ferrous or ferric will turn the brine tank orange as the water sits in there. If you have iron staining in the home then you need to have the system inspected along with a current water analysis done to see if the water has changed and if the system needs to be adjusted or additional equipment needed.
