I bought a house that came with a water purifing system. The system was being bypassed because no one was living in it for a couple of months. We started the system up in February and added 120 lbs of salt. The tank automaticially filled with water and the level was about 3 inches above the salt. Just last week the tank was down by about 1/2(of salt) so added another bag of salt. At that ponit the water was still over the salt but after adding another bag now the salt is on top of the water. What should it be? I don't think it has run through a regeneration cycle since adding the salt. I'm so confused!

@Shellbell13,
Shelly, the salt is dissolving as it is used up. Because there was no salt in the initially it dissolved much faster. Now that there is some brine developed in salt tank you should keep it at least 1/2 full of salt. There should be about 10-12" of water in salt tank.

@rmh2o,
Thank you. I was concerned that it wasn't using enough salt. I added 3 40lb bags the beginning of Feb and just last week I had to add another bag. The water is just level with the salt.
@Shellbell13,
Depending on the hardness of your water and usage that is normal salt usage. You can take a soft water sample to your local dealer to have them test it. Take a well sample also with current settings of softener and they can tell if it is set properly.
