A sad and horrifying story from the Red Sea.

All those happy vacationers leaving earth for the last time. At least we can presume they'd had some good times for the holidays... fun in the sun. So awful to think it crashed in front of the airport... surely a lot of people saw it.

In November 2000, there was a Boeing 737 filled with Seattle-area sun worshipers that crashed into water off the California coast. They were coming from Mazatlan, I think. What hell would this be?
Quote:
while descending, heard multiple popping sounds, saw the aircraft make a right turn for 270 degrees as a course change, impacted the water going approximately 80 degrees nose down. During the descent, the aircraft was twisting, flying erratically, wings rocking. At no time during the aircraft's last one to two minutes...

In the Alaskaair crash there was something wrong with the tail rudder connection and control was lost. I thought all 737's were refitted to correct that problem after it was discovered.PBS article

You'd think there'd be a couple of survivors... <sigh>

Yeah, the "___ minutes ago" thing often refers to when the latest version was posted on Yahoo, rather than when it happened.

Sad indeed.

British Prime Minister Tony Blair (news - web sites) was vacationing at the resort, but a spokeswoman at his office in London said neither Blair nor any members of his family were aboard the plane.

That gets my antennae quivering a bit, but is probably just coincidence...?

Actually, the plane crashed at about 0244 GMT (which is some couples of hours earlier than previously suggested).

In a news-conference at 12:00 GMT, the French government said there were 133 French passengers aboard, and a French medical official earlier said many of them were children on family holidays. It said the other two passengers were a Moroccan man and a Japanese woman.
The reason was obviously, as already said hours earlier, not the result of a terrorist act, but is linked to a technical failure of the plane.

In the twelve hours since that conference, there seem to be no other news and known facts.
