“Village boy! Gawan!” they chant.
“ … Why don’t you go back to your village and play with the other chickens!”

What does the word gawan mean?

@Nancy88,
I've always known the word spelled 'Gawan' here as 'Gawar'. In colloquial Hindi, it refers to a person who comes off as ill-mannered and uncivilized. It's, in fact, very common practice to use the term when referring to people from villages who have no clue how to conduct themselves in more urban settings.

@spidergal,
Interesting. I read it as a phonetic spelling of "go on," as in "go on, get out of here."

What is the context, Nancy? (For example if it's an Indian village, spidergal is probably right.)

Oy, I automatically thought Nancy88 was referring to an Indian village! She's been posting a lot of extracts from novels based on India of late, so I was sort of posting on autorun!

But after taking another look at the paragraph, I am confident this is an Indian setting. The person being quoted is probably screaming at a village boy and calling him a 'gawar' because of his obvious lack of civility and asking him to go back and play with his type of folks.

@spidergal,
I hadn't seen those other questions, sounds even more like "gawar" is what is intended here.
