@roger,
I've been reporting his spam, but it's not being acted upon.

I'm going to disappear for a few days, and hope he's gone by then.

I sent a gut reaction message when i reported it and i shouldnt have. (sorry mods)
I didnt get a reply from the mods but after considering it, this is obviously a poster with the same user name and different ip addresses.
and/or a slightly different (one letter) username and we dont notice that fact.
I'd be willing to bet the mods ban the IP adresses as they appear.
poor old mods can't be everywhere at once all the time but i understand there will be some help given them sometimes "soon" (ish).

@dadpad,
I know. Voting doesn't do anything but remove it from view.

Hmmm. I wonder if there is a site improvement possibility in there, somewhere.

It was kjdkfjdkfjd or whatever. It changes as soon as it's booted from the site.

@Ceili,
Good morning.

I'd like to take this opportunity to thank the people who reported the spammer.

However, I'd also like to take the opportunity to add a few things (you knew this was coming, yes?).
  1. Please report spam. Yeah, we read the Help Desk. It is the way to contact the actual Moderators. I found this topic by chance.
  2. Please don't report more than once. A simple note of "check out all of this guy's posts" will work for us. We had 61 tickets this morning. Over 20 of them were from one person. Really, that was excessive. So in addition to pulling spam and suspending the user, we also had to spend a lotta time merging and then answering tickets. This doesn't mean that I'm asking you to not report. Just, please, when it's getting to be that many reports, just a quickie message like that will do the trick.
  3. DON'T CLICK ON A SPAMMER'S LINKS. THEY ARE -- SURPRISE!! -- SPAM OR SPYWARE OR SOMETHING ELSE THAT'S NASTY. SO DON'T DO IT. WE DON'T. YOU ARE NOT HELPING US BY DOING THAT. ALL YOU ARE DOING IS HARMING YOUR OWN COMPUTER.
  4. Topics about spam don't help us one bit.
  5. Voting down spam only makes it harder for us to find it.
  6. There is no #6
  7. We will get to it. We're doing our best. Newer Mods are being trained but we're not done with their training yet. Delays should be minimized by then.
  8. Please, no green beer, we're driving.

Thank you.

@dlowan,
Well, we got at least 1 report from someone telling us that the stuff was spyware. Well, uh, don't click on it ....

I don't know Help Desk. I know about "Report" and "Contact Us".

@roger,
Help Desk is the hamster place where all the communications via Report and Contact Us go to be read and acted upon by their various minions. Help Desk is where the http://nerdapproved.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/04/hal-hamster.jpgsends back email to you to say he/she/it got the message.

Sometimes when I'm finding spam in the wee hours of the morning, I don't know that there's more than one until I find the next one. Sorry about the multiple reports. With jfkdwhatever, I saw a bunch all at once. Hence only one report.

Al right, I give up. Where's the Help Desk hidden? Or is that where the "Report" button reports to? And is jfkjdgdf an actual spammer--whom perhaps fortunately I've never seen--as opposed to what I thought it was at first but maybe not now--an alias for that other person whose screenname also starts with j who's been exasperating so many people lately.

@MontereyJack,
I think it is similar to an email box where all the messages created when people click on the Report button (found on every post) or the Contact Us link (found at the bottom of every page under Quick Links) are stored for human investigation/response.

Kind of like an automated dispatch desk where all the requests are gathered and handed out to the hamsters as they arrive in their work uniforms.

Is there anyway the report button could be linked to a thread. What if we moderate ourselves first. If I hit the report button, instead of going straight to a help desk, I'm directed to the last post on the "report" thread instead. So if I'm thinking of reporting a problem and I read that someone else already made one, then I wouldn't have to. However, if no one has, then I make a report that everyone can read and gets sent to the help desk. If someone chooses to make a private complaint then they hit the report button a second time on the new page.
It would cut down on unnecessary duplicates. And keep everyone upto snuff..

@Ceili,
Interesting idea. When I see one that has already been zeroed out, I assume it has been reported, but that could mean someone just voted it down.

@Ceili,
The Help Desk software (and yeah, it's where Contact Us and Report go) is something that Robert bought, and I'm not so sure it's at all customizable. It's, truly, not great software, but it's what we've got.

And yeah, the guy was definitely a spammer.
