The first wave of horror at the magnitude of death wears off. Then, the loss of such treasured antiquities settles.

Now, the politics... I'm surprised Khatami invited us to assist, given the current tenor of dialogue.

Any discussion of the quake, losses, recovery, politics involved in Bam would be interesting.

The US has been invited to help? Good, I would say - is it going to happen?

I think this a really good way to make a something good out of an incredibly sad event.
The total devastation is mind shattering.

The State Department said that while direct contact was appropriate "given the urgency of this situation," it should not be interpreted as an effort to thaw relations with a country once described by President Bush as part of an "axis of evil."

"There is no political angle," said State Department spokesman Lou Fintor. "There is a human catastrophe in Iran and our only mission is to alleviate the human suffering associated with yesterday's earthquake. These efforts will not alter the tone or intensity of our dialogue with the Iranians on other matters of grave concern."

Well, it certainly is somewhat difficult for both sites, to help and accept the help.

Fortunately, teams from Britain, Germany, Russia, and Switzerland are working there since more than 36 hours and others joined yesterday as well.

Heard the Swedes called it quits shortly after arriving. Are they sure its hopeless? Hate for it to be given up so quickly.

The search for survivors in the earthquake that devastated Iran's southeastern city of Bam will end Sunday, the United Nations said, adding that international rescue teams were no longer needed.

Yesterday search teams said, there would be no chance afetr another night with temperatures below 0° C.
This was confirmed by the German co-ordinator there, whom I heard this morning on the radio (12 hours ago). They were working all Sunday long in the various sectors, but it really seems to be very impossible to survive this night as well.

And, Sofia, just the rescue teams aren't needed any more - nothing said about the engineers, doctors, etc

I didn't realize it got so cold. Still, people could be covered or caught in warmer pockets.... I hate to give up when there's a chance someone is hanging on to life.

Of course, I am glad the doctors and health personnel are there.

Actually, I wondered a bit you mentioning the Swedes - even on Swedish sites I couldn't find any notions about Swedish rescue teams:
Quote:
Geneva-AP -- Sixteen countries, including the United States, have sent experts to Iran to search for earthquake victims. But the lead Swiss team is pulling out -- saying it's unlikely any more survivors will be found.

The Swiss Disaster Dog Association was the first team to arrive in Bam after Friday's quake. It didn't find any survivors.

Statistics indicate that it is rare for people to survive in earthquake rubble for more than three days.

The head of Switzerland's overall relief operation says rescuers encountered a catastrophe. He says Bam is "90 percent destroyed" and that victims were crushed, suffocated or frozen in the rubble of their mudbrick homes.

Whole blocks of homes that had collapsed onto their square lots may be discerned in the satellite imagery. Some smaller roads appear to be cluttered with debris and cars. A fortress is seen in the NE section of the image.

Obviously, there are none due to how the houses are built.
And all over Sunday (and Saturday night, it's Monday already there), no survivers were found by any team.

I think there was a survivor after several days after the big Mexico City quake, but that is a very different set of circumstances, buildings, weather, etc.

There had been one survivor, it was confirmed this morning, the last 36 hours.
Seems, they'll definately stop all searches this evening.

A man and female child found alive 6 days after the quake. It happens. Glad some persisted. I always think it is a grave miscalculation to give up so easily.

I guess I'd wind down the rescue after two weeks. Until then, I'd dig like someone was waiting. Am I the only one with this opinion, as well?

No, not at all.

Genarally, I'm totally with you.

I DO understand, however, the other decision as well, namely to think about the lifes of the survivors.

Three More Iranian Quake Survivors Found

Jan 1, 2:08 PM (ET)

By MATTHEW PENNINGTON

BAM, Iran (AP) - Rescue workers pulled three more survivors from the rubble of Bam's devastating earthquake, including a man saved Thursday after nearly seven days buried under a flattened house. Relief crews restored some electricity and rushed more aid into the ruined ancient city ...

Sadly, this is certainly among the last of these stories we'll be seeing.

If any silver lining is here, it would be the potential for opening dialogue between Iran and The US. I hope that proves fruitful ... for all concerned.
