What does the author mean by saying "reach between illusions"?
It means to go beyond what we want to believe to find the truth. In this case, to go beyond what we want to believe about the other person in our relationship to learn what that person is really like.

I think he is talking about the "illusions" that people have about one another.
He is talking about "getting real" with another person - not being in the fantasy we sometimes have about each other.
