Is a 9 hour shift common in the work place? Say working from 10 am to 7 pm from Monday to Friday.

Do you get an hour for lunch? If so, you are working an eight hour shift. (In retail, that's a common shift, with a one hour lunch from 2 to 3.)

Yeah that is pretty common. Especially when you add a lunch in there.
