I am returning to Oz from the US, bringing the dog. AQIS import FAQ says
"Step 4: Locate an Official Government Veterinarian, A Government
Approved Veterinarian and a Government Approved Laboratory in the
AQIS approved country of export."
I have located an official vet, but cannot find any information about government approved vets....would that be a regular veterinarian like we already take the dog to?
@viscy83,
Hello, viscy83
I am by no means an expert on importing dogs into Australia, but I did a bit of searching for you & came up with this information.
I hope this helps.
Good luck!
Quote:What is the difference between an ‘Official Government Veterinarian’ and an ‘Government Approved Veterinarian’?
There are two different veterinarians involved in the export process:
Official Government Veterinarians are employed by the government veterinary administration in the exporting country. They do not generally work in private veterinary practice.
Government Approved Veterinarians have special approval from the government veterinary administration in the exporting country. They generally work in private veterinary practice.
Where can I find a list of approved veterinarians?
AQIS does not have a list of Official or Government Veterinarians. You must contact the government quarantine, agriculture or food department in the country of export.

@viscy83,
Hi, I aam going through this right now too. I am finding it very stressful. What US city are you exporting from?
A Govt approved vet is a regular Vet that has got a special approval and done some extra training. My vet tells me that he qualifies but I too am having difficulty figuring out the exact questions I need to ask to be sure he is qualified and he sends the tests to the right lab.
@viscy83,
First time I have done this, so not sure the first reply went through. So hear it is again. We are now in the process of moving from the US to Australia. I was wondering how your experience went with the dog and if you have any tips. Presumably you left from LAX - what government approved vet did you use there to seal the crate?
Cheers Tanya
@daMule,
You are a jet - thank you for the info on the tests. Any suggestion on how to find a 'Government approved vet'?
For anyone else in the middle of shipping their pet to Australia, here is a link to what I think are the 'Official Government Veterinarians' as they are part of the USDA and located right by airports.

@Tans,
Hello,
We are returning back to Sydney from Los Angeles in about a year, Jan/Feb 2013 with two cats. I would like to hear any feedback from anyone who has completed the process.
@discographie,
Hi there. Have you returned to Sydney with your cats yet? I'll be doing the same in about 6 months, 2 cats coming from Arizona. Did you run into any problems?
@viscy83,
I see that your message is from 2011..... And not sure you're on here but I am doing the same. Left Aus in 2011 with our dog and getting ready to come home. Any positive info? I'm completely overwhelmed.
Cheers
Mary
