The Beagle2 will land, if all goes as planned, on mars on christmas day. This morning the landing pod detached from the carrier. The link below displays a tracking window that is pretty cool.
BEAGLE2
(do we still have a science board?)
Isn't that going to be cool?
Pictures from Mars on Christmas!
Is it the dog thing that gets you? yeah. 'tis cool indeed.
That's definitely something to look forward to. My xmas day might be a bit crazy, but I'll try to take a minute to check the lander-news.
Wow! I am a sucker for these explorations -
I still worry about li'l Voyager....
I'm sure this erudite bunch knows this, but i think that the name is cool, too. Beagle was the ship in which Charles Darwin made his personal voyage of discovery, the data from which he used in The Origin of the Species.
I like the name . . . did i mention that?
That is a great web site !
Great link, Lil' K, thanks !
I think it's a shame that the mission seems to be having problems. I really hope that they manage to gain contact with the wee fella soon.
We can expect Jan 4 when the mothership goes to a position where it will be able to contact the lander.
I'm patriotic enough to take some pride in the fact that the Beagle team are British-led. Prof Colin Pillinger looks like a farmer, but he seems to know his stuff. I'm awaiting 4th Jan with anticipation.
Yes, sad indeed. There was talk on the radio of an orbiter able to take images of the landing site. The images won't resolve the lander itself, but should show the parachutes and might give some indication of what went wrong or what to do next.
There is a possibility that the communication mode from the lander is compatible only with that of the mothership, which was tested repeatedly.
