Life is an ocean
Love is a boat
In troubled waters
It keeps us afloat

The group formed in 1978 and consisted initially of four brothers.
The band later met Davey Arthur and had great commercial success working with him.

A break from the music now.

A historical programme on the causes of Irish poverty
in the 17th, 18th and 19th century.
The brutality of landlords and
The inhumanity of the British ruling classes.

Lets start the day off with a bit of poetry.

THE SONG OF WANDERING AENGUS

by: W.B. Yeats

I went out to the hazel wood,
Because a fire was in my head,
And cut and peeled a hazel wand,
And hooked a berry to a thread;

And when white moths were on the wing,
And moth-like stars were flickering out,
I dropped the berry in a stream
And caught a little silver trout.

When I had laid it on the floor
I went to blow the fire a-flame,
But something rustled on the floor,
And some one called me by my name:
It had become a glimmering girl
With apple blossom in her hair
Who called me by my name and ran
And faded through the brightening air.

Though I am old with wandering
Through hollow lands and hilly lands,
I will find out where she has gone,
And kiss her lips and take her hands;
And walk among long dappled grass,
And pluck till time and times are done
The silver apples of the moon,
The golden apples of the sun.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Lovely. NOW lets listen to the Maestro Christy Moore sing it.
Musical Poetry, a nice way to start the day.

The DUBLINERS were formed in 1962, originally called The Ronnie Drew Band. The original line up were Ronnie Drew, Luke Kelly, Ciaran Burke & Barney McKenna. They changed their name to The Dubliners because Ronnie didn't like the original name & though the line up has changed over the years, to this day The Dubliners they remain.Today the band are Barney McKenna, Eamonn Campbell, John Sheahan, Sean Cannon & Patsy Watchorn. Luke, Ronnie & Barney have all passed away, most recent was Ronnie in 2008. Ronnie was famous for his unique voice & long white beard. Luke Kelly is considered one of the greats, he died in 1974.

I think I'll finish today with a favourite of mine.
The lyrics are fantastic. Fun.

The Reel in the Flickering Light
by Christy Moore
________________________________________
As I was walking home one evenin'
I know this takes some believin'
I met a group of creatures
With the strangest lookin' features

A poor old dog and a worm in the weed
And a fine old pigeon, yes indeed
A daddy longlegs jumped up sprite
As he danced to the reel in the flickering light
Oh round we go, heel to the toe
And the daddy longlegs jumped up sprite
As he danced to the reel in the flickering light

On his thin and wispy spindles
He was deft and he was nimble
His eyes were scientific
And his dancing was terrific

And the rats and the worms they made a din
And the nettles in the corners took it in
"Oh God" says I, "Tonight's the night"
"We'll dance to the reel in the flickering light"
Oh round we go, heel to the toe
"Oh God" says I "tonight's the night
We'll dance to the reel in the flickering light"

Then he looked at me directly
With a gaze that could dissect me
Then he asked me in a whisper
"Have you got any sisters?"

"Oh God almighty" says I to him
"What sort of a man d'you think I am?
I've only one she's not your type
She wouldn't dance the reel in the flickering light"
So round we go, heel to the toe
"I've only one she's not your type
She wouldn't dance a reel in the flickering light"

Says he:
"Does she come from another planet?
Does she got a bee in her bonnet?
Does she do her daily duties
You never know we might be suited"

And the rats and the worms began to laugh
And some of them started shufflin' off
We're goin' to have some fun tonight
Getting ready for the reel in the flickering light
Oh round we go, heel to the toe
We're goin' to have some fun tonight
Getting ready for the reel in the flickering light

I could see he had no scruples
When I looked into his pupils
They were purple or magenta
Like a statue during lent

I said "I'll get her right away"
"Good man" says he "now don't delay"
We're going to have some fun tonight
And he flicked his legs in the flickering light.
Oh round we go, heel to the toe
We're goin' to have some fun tonight
And he flicked his legs in the flickering light.

Then up stepped a red carnation
and they gave her an ovation
She was warm and enchatin'
As she slowly started dancin'

And the bright old pigeon peeled his eye.
And the nettles and the weeds began to sigh.
Daddy longlegs said "my-oh-my
Are we ready for the reel in the flickering light?"
Oh round we go, heel to the toe
Daddy longlegs said "my-oh-my
Are we ready for the reel in the flickering light?"

She was gentle, she was charmin'
And I heard him call her "darlin'
He was graceful as a whisper
On his delicate legs of silver

And the rats and worms were still as mice
And the poor old pigeon said "That's nice"
A shimmering veil on the lovely bride
As they danced to the reel in the flickering light
Oh round we go, heel to the toe
A shimmering veil on the lovely bride
As they danced to the reel in the flickering light

Oh round we go, heel to the toe
A shimmering veil on the lovely bride
As they danced to the reel in the flickering light

Lets start the day off with a girl from Forkhill, Co Armagh. The talented Miss Paula Flynn.
Paula is a singer/ songwriter and an independent radio documentary maker.
In 2007, while still studying at Dublin City University she recorded a version of David Bowie's
Let's Dance which found its way into the hands of advertising executives. The voice did it for them,
and it seemed to strike a chord with the punters too. EMI came on board decided to release it as a single
which went on to top the Irish charts.
You can get all the latest news on Paula at www.misspaulaflynn.com

Here's her cover version of Lets Dance. Awesome!

A short film from Co Wicklow, the County known as The Garden of Ireland.
The song is July sung by Mundy.
I have to say Wicklow has some fantastic walkways & great fishing,
and there's nothing like taking a horse out on the beach.
Wonderful County & coming from a Dubliner that's high praise indeed. Wink
