Why are Americans so careless with trash? I walk up the street and there is someone's entire packaging from a Mc Donalds meal. Just dropped when they were done with the wrappers. What kind of person does this? The streets are strewn with spent cigarette butts and empty beef jerky wrappers. How utterly disgusting and sad...

I used to smoke years ago and when I would finish a cigarette I would squish the butt between my index finger and thumb and empty the tobacco from the butt then place the filter in my pants pocket.

And for ladies who smoke you have purses why not a small case for spent butts in there with all of the other items?

How can people degenerate to such a degree to become so thoughtless toward their own home planet and country? Is it really that much out of your life to hold onto your trash and dispose of it in a suitable container?

This sickens me and I am inclined to believe that this generation (not all) will be considered the sleaziest and most disrespectful generation ever to have live on planet earth.

If people would just take care of their own refuse our planet would be pristine and beautiful.

Do people litter like this in Europe and other places in the world? (just wondering) How do we change this terrible cycle of flagrant disregard for our planet?

I don't mean to imply that all Americans are litter bugs but there is enough litter that it seems people generally just don't get it.

What ever happened to those commercials of the American Indian with tears in his eyes by the river side with trash floating in it?

Perhaps it is time again to air something like that?

It is summer time in Maine tourist season and the litter bugs are out in full force. Too bad a can of raid would not cure this ill.

I was out walking and this is what I saw. Someone finished their large big gulp soda and left the plastic cup right on the city park lawn. Not one concern whatsoever on the impact this would have on the earth. That some squirrel may get stuck on it or a seagull might get it stuck on their head and die.

It seems the average person has no concern whatsoever for the crime of littering. It is as if the earth is their garbage can and they would just as soon defecate in their own bed. Oh I forgot this is not their own bed this is someone else' bed they are merely tourists. Visitors from, another state and they don't care if this state is kept nice for their next visit.

This brings me to the next piece of litter. Someone was apparently hanging some sort of yard sale sign and got the masking tape all balled up in the wind so they left about a yard of it stuck to the sidewalk and blowing in the breeze. I wonder if their yard sale was worth some poor wood lawn creature getting this masking tape stuck in their throat and dying because of it.

Then there was the empty cigarette pack, out of cigarettes? Well the just throw the pack on the ground.

If this was not as unsightly a molestation of our earth the thousands of spent cigarette buts lining the sidewalks took the cake, frosting and all.

This reminds me of when i was living in Dallas Texas and saw a motorcycle cop finish his cigarette and toss the butt into the street without even a thought. While I a law abiding citizen would (at the time when I smoked) squeeze out the tobacco on the ground and put the butts in my pocket and dispose of them when near a trash can. I did that even as a kid because I was taught by my parents never to litter.

Then here is the clincher, over by the water sprinkler fountain some person opened their hatchback and dumped about 5 used baby diapers on the lawn. Then they quietly drove off.

What exactly is the penalty for littering in Maine? Apparently it is not enough, tourists and residents would think twice if littering came with a mandatory one night in jail. People go to jail for littering in their body with too many intoxicants why not for littering the earth with toxins? Even one cigarette butt should carry jail time!

ENOUGH ALREADY PEOPLE!

We have a great pacific garbage pack swirling around and storm drains take these pieces of litter and dump them directly into the sea. Birds, fish and all manner of wildlife are dying at an alarming rate found with spent cigarette lighters in their stomach and still people don't get it!

Maine wants to open casinos and attract more tourists to the state. I hate to be racist but gamblers are flagrantly the lowest life forms of human species below rats and blood sucking insects.

Who is going to clean up the earth after this scourge has impacted the beautiful pristine state of Maine, (where much of the world's water supply comes from)? You know that bottled water that you drink and toss the bottle and cap out the window so you car won't be littered?

There needs to be a much more serious deterrent so people are HIGHLY conscious that trash is not to be left ANYWHERE that is not designed to dispose of it. If tourists are told when driving into the state that littering carries JAIL TIME they may think twice before dumping their baby diapers on a park-side lawn! Cops should prosecute litterbugs for even the slightest infraction including cigarette butt littering. It is time that littering become foremost in peoples minds.

Let's clean up the earth and keep it that way. I would rather see litter bugs in jail overnight than see an animal or bird dying because they have a cigarette butt stuck in their throat. People will THINK the next time they go to litter even if they are in someone else's state.

Then when the gamblers decide to litter and toss their losing lottery tickets wherever they land they will be getting back more than they gambled for...

If you had seen the garbage and litter I observed on my walk today you would lose all faith in most people. They are slobs and brainless wastes of life undeserving of the clean air that they breath and certainly undeserving of the freedom that they take for granted.

Littering is a crime against nature and humanity and needs to be taken much more seriously and stopped altogether! Young and old need to learn this or GO TO JAIL!

Today I walked along the beach in Maine that only a few weeks ago they did a cleanup with volunteers. Little kids from the cub scouts (on a boiling hot day) cleaning up the trash left by the middle class and lower class. Why do I say middle class and low class? Well considering the high class make up only a small portion of society. I have lost faith in the middle class. They want wall street to bail out their sorry asses. I was for it now I don't really care. If these pigs ever get to be corporations themselves they will just bring their dirty habits to a greater degree and proportion. Multiply 20 cigarette butts times a few billion... If the middle class can litter without any concern about the lowest class of the earth and animals why should the upper class give a **** about them? Littering is in epidemic stages and this is a problem of the middle and lower class not the rich! Yes the rich pollute rivers and the oceans on a massive scale the but middle class are too lazy to put their trash in a proper disposal unit. I see this littering on a mass scale by the middle and lower class as much worse a crime.

Yay for the British!

I wish Americans could stop for a moment and pick up their own trash, rather not litter it in the first place.

I noticed him litter, did anyone else make note of it before she made him pick it up?

It is sad the mentality that people have lowered themselves to while oblivious of anything other than fulfilling their sexual (and other) addictions...

I will never conform to such negligence.

Portland smokers to get fined for tossing cigarette butts

Portland smokers face $100 fine for tossing butts

http://www.pressherald.com/news/Portland-smokers-to-get-fined-for-tossing-butts.html?searchterm=cigarette+littering

Someone in the newspaper today wrote a complaint about this saying it is just a ploy by liberals to quash smoking rights.

I say to that, have they taken a walk down the streets of the city lately?

There are so many spent cigarette butts wall to wall it looks like tobacco road! I don't give a darn if people smoke or not but I certainly care if they can't dispose of their butts in a proper disposal unit!

These spent butts end up washed down the sewer drains which are not filtered and wash directly out to sea! It has noting to do with their smoking rights other than it is a dirty nasty thing to simply drop their butts wherever they land.

If this does not stop these litter bugs then raise the fine to 200 dollars!

I finally love my city again...

This is what some dummy wrote and was published in the newspaper today.

Anti-butt ordinance seems to have smokers in its sights

About the story "City: Kick butts problem" (Feb. 8): This is nothing but an attempt by the political correctness police to stop folks from smoking.

Do we not already have littering ordinances? Why would the city even bother with this type of ordinance unless it was created to try to stop folks from smoking?

And how much is the fine for littering? Is it as much as the fine for cigarette butts? If not, why isn't it?

Once again, the liberal city of Portland is trying to do away with something that is not on their PC list.

**** ******* (I blanked out his name)

@RexRed,
Rex, you've got to read this, I insist, it's a whale of an article about the system of trash dealing in Cairo.

@RexRed,
That's another reason I love to travel in Germany. Most cities, even big ones, are clean and tidy. Even after disasters, they seem to repair their buildings very quickly, and signs of the damages just aren't there. I remember when I was in Hamburg, and on the building next to the Elbe River, there's a marker on the building where the flood waters got to. I've also seen similar things in other German cities and villages. If it weren't for that marker, nobody would be the wiser.

Trash and litter are rarely seen.

Contrast that to most cities in India........

@ossobuco,
Very interesting story, fascinating detail. Many thanks for sharing Ossobuco! Smile

It seems like is is going to spiral out of control and the reconciliation brings it to an abrupt ending.

Hopefully in few years there will be an update.

@RexRed,
Frankly this planet doesn't care.

The only reason why people make a big deal out of it is because they think they are fighting for a good cause.

Ah, angst is in the air tonight.
