Rookie needs help with an Aqua 1

We just bought a house that has an Aqua 1 system in it. I've never used a softener, so I have NO idea what to do. I discovered that it was unplugged and not working. Other than simply plugging it in, what do I need to do to see if it is functional? The salt tank was pretty much empty. There was about 3 inches of water in it.
