I have bought a house which contains a Lindsay model 20198. It may be up to 40 years old. Are there any filters or anything else that needs to be replaced, or any other suggestions you might have?

Get rid of it. Newer Lindsays were junk. One that old can hardly be very efficient or work very well. Time to update if you consider your water important.
