What is it that you cannot do without closing your eyes apart from sleep.

sneeze - although this was apparently tested on Mythbusters. It's doable, but not easily.

If you had Chai's 3rd or even 4th eyes you could pull that feat off LOL.
I used to work for a guy who would fall asleep with his eyes open. He'd play tennis, come in to the station and fall asleep on the floor for a couple hours and you could see his eyeballs. You could see when he was in REM sleep, his eyelids were half open and his eyes were jerking around. So that removes half the riddle right there. I'd go with whoever said "blink".
