Look for light coming in around the door frame.

@johnnytg,
In most cases, the switch closes to you operates the light closest to you, so turn on the switch farthest from you.

If that doesn't work then you have a 50% chance of being right with your next choice of switches.

@johnnytg,
Flip switches 1 and 2 on. Wait a minute. Flip switch 2 off. Enter the room.
If the bulb is on, switch 1 controls it.
If the bulb is off and hot, switch 2 controls it.
If the bulb is off and cold, switch 3 controls it.

@markr,
It says without entering the room.

Also, I took it to mean that if you can't see inside the room, you wouldn't be able to see light around the door.

@johnnytg,
"in the next room there is a light"

so then one of the switches must be in "on" so its that one =b

did you mean to say "light bulb"?

well it's not fun, but if this was real, you can take out all of the switches, and turn them to "on"

if the light is on, that means there is a direct, continuous current running through the circuit from the house, through the switch, to the bulb, back to the switch, to the house... it's only 80w. touch the exposed wire to see if you get a zap...

but i'm sure the answer is more witty than this retarded answer... lmk when you get the right answer =].

the two post before this was the answer i would of given, but without entering the room, i dont know

aren't you allowed to enter the room?

why else would they specify that "there is a door".
i think they say "there is a door" meaning you can actually go into the room.
they specify "without opening the door" to prevent someone from just keeping the door open while trying all the switches.
no?

@chai2,
You're correct. However, I'm assuming that the problem has not been stated accurately. I think this is too similar to another problem (that allows entry to the room once) to be a coincidence.
