LightWizard recently sent me the following:
Quote:
I experimented around with using the address in properties for an image on a site (in this case, IMDb) and then going to the tinyurl site to change the link. At first it worked and then it dissapeared and would not work again. However, it worked on the smaller image -- at least I think it did as I haven't logged back in to see if that one also dissapeared.

Below are explanations for the ongoing problems you're having with posting photos on the "Quess the movie by the picture" thread, LW.

Note: this thread might be of interest to some others who are having problems posting photos on A2K.

-----------------------
Short explanation: Before using tinyurl.com to "compress" an image's url, make sure the address you're giving to tinyurl ends with ".jpg" or ".gif". Also, avoid posting images from a website that uses hotlink prevention, such as imdb.com
-----------------------

However, since you've been having the problems for a while now, I'll go more in depth into why some image posting attempts were or were not working.

Following are some URLs you've recently tried to post as images, LW:

<-----------------------
This one had no chance of displaying:

javascript:void(location.href='http://tinyurl.com/create.php

It's pointing to a web page (notice the '.php' filename extension) rather than an image, and there's JavaScript code in there which won't work when posted on these boards.
----------------------->

<-----------------------
This one had no chance, either:

http://tinyurl.com/xprs

Here's the URL I tried to post as an image above: http://tinyurl.com/xprs
That page redirects to:
http://www.geocities.com/Hollywood/Park/1568/ThirdManPictures.html

Like the last problem, that is not an image! Again, it's a web page (look at the '.html' extension on the end).
On that html page, rick-click the images themselves & click Properties in order to get the correct URL for a particular image.
----------------------->

<-----------------------
Another problem:

http://tinyurl.com/xxcc
Which redirects to:
http://i.imdb.com/Photos/Ss/0114746/th-4

The filename extension for that image wasn't included. That file is in fact a jpg image, but the extension was left out. Sometimes you can post an image without including the extension, but it's best to avoid that.

Here's the correct url: http://i.imdb.com/Photos/Ss/0114746/th-4.jpg

Note: I believe IMDB is using hotlink prevention controls which may prevent the image from being displayed even though the filename is corrected. However, it may work OK if you've recently visited any part of imdb.com
----------------------->

<-----------------------
This one had problems for the same reason as the last:

http://tinyurl.com/xx3i
Which redirects to:
http://i.imdb.com/Photos/Ss/0114746/4

Again, no image file extension (this one is also a jpg), and IMDB's hotlink prevention sometimes throws in a monkeywrench.
----------------------->

<-----------------------
This one worked just fine:

http://tinyurl.com/xpvn

Here's the URL I posted as an image above: http://tinyurl.com/xpvn
It redirects to:
http://filmstills2.netfirms.com/houseof1/house01.jpg

Note that this one was using the correct filename extension ('.jpg').
----------------------->

I hope that helps a bit. Wink

Edit: I've fixed & simplified the explanations above a little bit.

Monger, is it possible to use tinyurl.com to post my pictures from the home computer. I believe I read this could happen but I haven't the foggiest idea how to do it.

Let's see if I can successfully post a new IMDb image as that seems to be a problem whether one used tinyurl or not (and this ends in .jpeg):

http://i.imdb.com/Photos/Ss/0167260/lotr3_24324.jpg

As I surmised -- and you've explained. IMDb is not the place to go for images.

Hey Ceili, I'm not sure whether you're asking if you can upload the files to TinyURL's server, or if maybe they have some special way to reach files on your hard drive that're otherwise inaccessible across the Internet, but either way the answer is no.

TinyURL only does one thing. They just set up pages that automatically redirect to any string of text (which is more useful if the string is a URL).

One good place to upload photos is MSN Groups. They let you upload images for free, & they allow hotlinking. The Raven's Realm is an MSN Group that many A2K members upload photos to before posting them on the forums here.

Yup, and Able2Know does the same thing actually. If you tried to post an image located on A2K's servers onto another site you'd have similar problems. Many sites prevent people from hotlinking their images in order to avoid extra bandwidth costs.

That's what I thought, Monger.
Thanks for answering so quickly.

I thought of uploading to "The Raven's Realm" and then using tinyurl to disguise the image but that's a lot of work! I have not found few sites left that have vintage film stills -- actually, IMDb is really sparse itself. I used to haunt the bookstores on Hollywood Blvd. and surround environs for movie stills and at one time had a great collection. I have since sold them allm (at a handsome profit!)
