Culligan water system plumbing code

I am thinking about buying a whole house water softener (house 3800 sf, 41/2 baths, 5 people) The main water inlet for the house (garage) is 1.5 inch dia. and was told by the salesman that they would be required to install a commercial grade softener because they have the 1.5 inch diameter inlet & outlets as per California plumbing code. Is this true, or just a salesman trying to over sell me a more expensive system? Thanks, Timothy

You cannot allow the flow to be restricted by the water softener. The 1.5" inlet would be restricted by most home water softeners that are made for 3/4" water supplies. Here is a tip: You only really need water softened on the hot water side. The supply to the water heater is probably smaller than 1.5" See if they can install the home size water softener to the smaller supply line right before it goes to the water heater.
