Rain soft hardness Setting

Is the number you input the softness or hardness?
It's labeled hardness so I put 85 as the level.
Shouldn't this slow don the consumption of salt?
The harder the less cleaning by the salt. True?

wrong.
the higher the Hardness level, the more time it uses during the regen cycle. Also there is more water put into the brine tank to clean and recharge. It probably will regenerate more often

Therefore the level is really representing the softness not the hardness.

0 grains per gallon(gpg)hard is soft water. the higher the number the harder the water from the source. so we are talking hardness
