Yes people have always buildt beautiful places for their god/s and as a place to meet.
The royals buildt wonderful castles for themselves.
And the communistic leaders enourmus buildings as a rule just awful looking in the name of communism.
People like to build something for what they believe in.
Small churches might not be visited by tourists, but that does not mean they are not in use. Churches are as a rule for worship and many happenings in life and death.
What should be done about St. Peter's Basilica in Rome, to help the poor in other countries? Tear it down? Burn it? Forget about it?
What about Westminster Abbey and the poor in other countries?
How about our Lutheran churches and cathedrals? Should we get rid of them to help poor Lutherans?
It certainly is not a solution.
