Is there anything to see whatsoever?
How about Monaco, which is just nextdoor?

Going for a quick vacation with a friend, maybe we'll rent mopeds and just wander around a bit. Would love to get any pointers

@Mame,
I pledge to do my best. There is a beach, so it can't be very difficult.

@dagmaraka,
The Matisse Museum is there. I liked it much more than I thought I would. I think there is also a museum for Chagall, but I skipped that one. There are a lot of galleries and shops in general, it's something of a tourist town and can get rather crowded in the summer. Sadly, I didn't get to Monaco.

Hmm, I like both Matisse and Chagall. Will see if we feel artsy schmartzy. I envision a lot of coffeeshops in my near future.

@dagmaraka,
Monaco has Jacque Coustou's museum, the palace, and Princess Grace's grave in the Notre Dame cathedral. They also have a very nice auto museum.

@cicerone imposter,
My friend is a diver, so Jacques Cousteau will certainly be of interest.

I'm not all that much into palaces...i prefer ruins when it comes to castles and such, but i can be a good tourist for a day or two. otherwise i prefer the coffeeshop kind of tourism, preferably with the natives, ultimately just sinking into the local life for a few days. but....don't know anyone in Nice.

After all the nonsense about freedom fries and cheese eating surrender monkeys, it heartwarming to see such a thread title; yes, France is nice.

@JTT,
Every year from 1994 to 2004 we had two holidays a year in Nice. (Then we got into Spain.) We usually stayed at the Hotel Nicea in rue Miron. It is a wonderful place. The beach is not sand, but little stones. The whole coast from Nice to the Italian border is great. It is an easy trip to Italy, the border town of Ventimiglia is a short train ride away, and San Remo is feasible for a day trip.

@contrex,
Ventimiglia...sounds divine. So, I presume it is easy to take trains and buses from there to other towns? We don't have to rent a car? I'd like to rent a moped....but i don't know how to shift gears on a motorcycle, it'd have to be an automatic one...and those aren't fast enough. Sigh.

@dagmaraka,
There aren't any gears to shift in a moped. The automatic gear consist of a centrifugal clutch. You have to get the motor up to speed then it connects motor drive to wheel. You have to be careful as when the clutch connects as you could jerk the moped off and lose balance. Increase speed gradually. Make sure you have your brakes on which are like in a bicycle - hand brakes. The right hand is the throttle and the left the brakes in most models.

I admit to wanting to try a "moped", some of them look fabulous.

@dagmaraka,
A moped is a motorcycle with 49cc engine i.e. it is limited to 60 or 70 kph. It is not legal in highways but fine with city streets and side roads.

@littlek,
The trick is that I have a trauma from my teenage years. I drove one expensive (not mine) motorcycle into a pile of wood and there happened to have been a nail - it went right through a gas tank. I've been terrified to touch a motorbike since.

@dagmaraka,
I see.... but, this was years ago. You're much more experienced with gears and such by now.
