VATICAN CITY, Dec 1 (Reuters) - The Vatican on Monday issued a strong defence of its controversial position against condoms, saying fidelity, chastity and abstinence were the best ways to stop the spread of HIV/AIDS in a "pan-sexualist society." In a clear reference to condoms, he said information campaigns should not be "based on policies that foster immoral and hedonistic lifestyles and behaviour, favouring the spread of the evil.
The United Nations says this year has seen more death and infection from AIDS than ever before, with 3 million people killed and 5 million more infected. As many as 46 million people worldwide are believed to have HIV, according to UNAIDS.
Well, he certainly is consistent, I'll say that. And leave it at that, in deference to those who respect him as God's Deputy...
My sole words would be: proportionality. Sometimes a purported evil should be committed, if the consequences of not taking it be worse.
