Last Night ~ Traveling Wilburys
OK...it was considered very square and uncool in my circle but what can I say?! I recently craved a shot of saccharine. I just listened to Carpenters on Youtube. (Though, I have to admit it was hard to watch as Karen was the first celebrity in our memories to die of anexoria nervosa.)
Karen (RIP) had such a good voice (tonality, phrasing). Few know that she had perfect pitch and was a superb drummer. In fact, Buddy Rich gave her his critical seal of approval...very rare for him. They were very tight and displayed a dedication to recording and performing quality .. almost unparalleled in their craft.
'Superstar 1971' was one of the best. Also, 'Rainy Days and Sundays', Some of the other hits were a bit sappy to me...but they had some incredible songs and sounds that make me fondly recall the '70s.
Agreed... Karen Carpenter's voice was just magical. I can listen to the syrupy "We've Only Just Begun" over and over again just for the experience of hearing her voice.
Incidentally, Sonic Youth did a great cover of "Superstar" on the Juno soundtrack.
David Archuleta
Listen to American Idol and a 17-yr-old singer David Archuleta. This kid is one very talented musician ..not just a singer. Wait 'til you hear him play piano! He might be saving that for later performances. This kid has REAL deep talent and will surely blossom to be a top performer of this decade of he decides he wants to take that route. His stage presence will soon match his musical talent as he matures. He's sincere 'aw shucks' now...and it's a refreshing break.
You just can't teach (or learn) what he does to these songs!

Thanks for your reply, Shapless. I'm doing the same thing with listening to Karen's work. She transcends that genre..pure musicality.

This song's been on my mind for several minutes now so I decided to put it on this thread. Luckily and to my surprise I found the exact same live recording of the song. It's Lifehouse with "Whatever It Takes": Enjoy  :
