Why do I always forget what a great band the Pistols are?
I suspect their place as the prototypical proto-punk band always causes me to overlook them.
I have mixed feelings about them, I actually think they were just a rock band and punk was a label (over which corporate and youth worlds fought for ownership).
John Lydon gave them something quite different upfront (but it was a fairly natural extension of 'persona' front man aka Bowie and the NY Dolls).
Musically the brains were Matlock and Cook - and they were just rockers.
Did you know that the opening octaves of Pretty Vacant are a bastardisation of the opening riff to Abba's Mamma Mia?
You're right to call them proto-punk.
All the gobbing and safety pins came later.
