Ninna Ninna

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-cwKLB_VQQo

This song was featured at the end of episode 84 of The Sopranos. I found it on youtube last night, and there there is a link to the song on The Smithsonian's Global Sound website.

According to the liner notes the song is a "Lullaby from Sardinia. The mother sings to her little boy. His father, a brigand, escaped to the mountains and is being followed. She sings: 'Antoneddu, little Anton, I'd rather see you dead than a bandit in the mountains.' So that she will not have to disclose her husband's whereabouts, she too will go into the mountains. Her son sings: 'Mamma, Mamma, when I live in the mountains, I won't fall into dishonor.' In the third stanza the ghost-like voice of the father is heard: 'Sing, o beautiful, sing o beautiful, all around me it's quiet and I only hear you singing.'"

This song is so hauntingly beautiful, and compelling, I've been playing it over and over since I found it.

sure was, panzade. i think i prefer take 1 to take 2, but makes me wonder how musicians go about deciding what take is best? i'm aware of one example, But Not For Me, with Miles, Rollins, and maybe Silver, where the alternate take is considered superior to the master take, but in what way i haven't a clue, having never heard the master take. Embarrassed

I'm listening to the cover-mounted(free) CD on January's Mojo magazine Soul Power.Loadsa tracks from the Memphis based Stax vault.Standout tracks for me are The Soul Children "Hearsay";William Bell "I Forgot To Be Your Lover";Isaac Hayes "Soulsville";an alternate version of Otis Redding's "Mr Pitiful",and a really cool Booker T. & The M.G.'s "Soul Clap '69".
