This song was featured at the end of episode 84 of The Sopranos. I found it on youtube last night, and there there is a link to the song on The Smithsonian's Global Sound website.
According to the liner notes the song is a "Lullaby from Sardinia. The mother sings to her little boy. His father, a brigand, escaped to the mountains and is being followed. She sings: 'Antoneddu, little Anton, I'd rather see you dead than a bandit in the mountains.' So that she will not have to disclose her husband's whereabouts, she too will go into the mountains. Her son sings: 'Mamma, Mamma, when I live in the mountains, I won't fall into dishonor.' In the third stanza the ghost-like voice of the father is heard: 'Sing, o beautiful, sing o beautiful, all around me it's quiet and I only hear you singing.'"
This song is so hauntingly beautiful, and compelling, I've been playing it over and over since I found it.
