Flaming Lips - Clouds Taste Metallic
Flaming Lips, eh? I remember that song about some girl who don't like jelly, but that's it. I bought that record actually. It was much too rough, raw and sloppy for me. How is "Clouds Taste Metallic"?
My first Flaming Lips was 'Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots' and was one of my favourites of that year (2002 I think) along with Death In Vegas 'Scorpio Rising).
I've since bought Clouds, The Soft Bulletin and Hit To Death and I agree they sound rough (production wise) on first listen but they're growing on me. Soft Bulletin is supposed to be their best but for me Yoshimi is.
The vocals are on that cusp between engaging and annoying (a bit like Mercury Rev and The Shins) to me.
You ever hear old Pink Floyd? I mean when Syd Barret was in the band? That's kind of the feeling I get from Flaming Lips. They are out there, man. Gotta respect that.
Yeah kicky - I was actually going to say that all the vocals I'd mentioned were travelling a journey started by Syd in Floyd.
Have you ever heard any of Syd's post Floyd solo work?
Just say no to drugs kids.
Shine on you crazy diamond.

No, I never did hear any of his post-floyd stuff. I can't even imagine how far off the deep end that must have been.
Shine on, indeed...
Was the name Yoshimi taken from another band?
Absolutely no idea Pan, in the song she's a girl super hero with a streak of wistfulness.
Some song Nina Simone sings keeps running through my head, but I can't remember the title. Good song, though.
My baby just cares for me?
No hingehead, I think it is Bud, a very sexy song only Simone could do justice to.
