I always saw Picard as the Thespian and Kirk as the action man.
Sisko an amalgam.
Archer more back to the start.
I just want to go on the record;
I LOVE CAPTAIN KATHRYN JANEWAY

KATHRYN JANEWAY is sharp and very accomplished, my second best after Picard...

Maybe so. I see it this way: just as garbage becomes art when you arrange it geometrically, it's more dramatic to see Kirk being sensitive and Picard acting like Dirty Harry. The contrast, man... the contrast.

Hi Arjuna glad to see you here ! Very Happy
...considering it gave me my first relation with Cosmology since young age I indulge myself with Star Trek even if it is what we may call a light product, I simply try to not rationalize it to much and enjoy the ride...

@Victor Eremita,
TOS wasn't just a "Kirk" show, even though he was obviously a main character and probably one of the most memorable TV characters ever. But TOS was also one of the best male bonding "buddy" presentations ever. Unlike the other Star Trek's which have happened since TOS, the Kirk/Spock interaction was uniquely strong without being sexual. Smile

@rosborne979,
I would say Enterprise tried to do this with Archer and Trip, but I also thought that Archer and Trip were totally gay for each other as well.
That is absolutely, in my opinion, why Enterprise did not last, far to much sexual innuendo and faux eroticism.
Still liked it though and shame it did not get its full run.
And that stupid dog, we get it, he likes cheese (sun smile)

(I am not saying dogs are stupid, just that one)

Yes as much as I love Kathryn I must also concede that Picard is the better of the two, I never liked it when he had fights though.
Except if I remember rightly when they showed him as a young man?

No ones mentioned Q yet so I thought I would.
Talk about a wealth of philosophical ideas.
If its a Q episode I am there.

(Great to see you made it here Fil Albuquerque)

Q was one of my favorite character, although I could never understand why stupid Picard never realized it was one of the most spectacular alien encounters they ever had. What the hell where they exploring for... they run into a Q and all they try to do is get rid of him. Morons.

Oh my giddy aunt I had never thought of it that way.
Thank you so much for giving me this gem of perspective.
But it may also have had something to do with Q introducing the Alpha quadrant to the Borg, he did do that didn't he?
But you are absolutely right in your perspective, Q is the closest thing to a tangible God they ever met and all they ever do is want rid of him.
Some explorers.
I have only seen the last episode of Next Generation once, I should try and look it up.
Q is in that one isn't he?
But maybe it is also because they know he does not want to be studied, but that's not really true either, Q loves attention, but he would be likely to lie to them every chance he got. Or would he?
Well my Kathryn came closer to understanding and exploring Q and the Qcontinuum than any of the others.
The Federation have been known to bug me, for instance the Maqui, although they may have been dangerous, they had a genuine reason to fight.
But I suppose the creators did reflect this by giving them strong basis in Voyager.
Great speaking with you.
What is your favourite series and or episode and or character?
What is your least favourite series or character?
What did you think of the new film?
Are they making another one?

All my best.

@Victor Eremita,
Unfortunaly I'm not fond of the movies with Picard, they'r not in the spirit with the series. Too much focus on action and explotions, which isn't what the series are about, it's like bad B movies without intelligent negotiation, problemsolving or paradoxes.

@kotigre,
I can't imagine any navy in the known universe putting a kid like Kirk in charge of a ship like the Enterprise.

@Fil Albuquerque,
There was one point of comparison between Janeway and Picard that I found amusing. In Who Watches the Watchers, Captain Picard tries to explain his superior technology and advancements to the Mintakans by using analogy and story. In that Da Vinci episode where the holographic Da Vinci is astounded by 24th century technology, Captain Janeway simply tells him, she just knows more than he does and that's the way it is. lol nice going Janeway, making Da Vinci feel inadequate.

P.S. Cannot forgive Admiral Janeway for sending the Enterprise-E to Romulus without the escort of the Federation fleet which eventually lead to the Enterprise being outclassed by Shinzon's Scimtar leading to Data's death........ boourns!!!

Hi Sun,

I tend to prefer TOS mostly because I grew up with it first. TNG was also very good (mostly because they introduce the Borg storyline which gave the series some teeth and seriousness), but Voyager was a disappointment and DS9 was unbearable (too much focus on religion and the Bejorans, who cares about that stuff in a sci-fi series).

In TOS, I liked City on the Edge of Forever and Balance of Terror among others. In TNG anything with Q or The Borg was worth watching.
Even though I'm a sci-fi addict I stopped watching DS9 just because I couldn't stand it any more. Although that Ferrengi Quark was a good character. And on Voyager, I liked Robert Piccardo as the Holo-Doctor.

Enterprise was pretty dull except for that female vulcan who was so sexy that she made it hard to concentrate on the actual show.

I thought the new film was good (characters were very fun), but the story line was pretty weak. I really don't like all the time travel stuff. It allows them to play with reality too much and to erase themselves out of plot inconsistencies which I think they should be required (as good writers) to resolve.

I'm sure they will make another film, given how well the last one was received.
