The picture of Teresienstadt also sort of looks like it...but I don't know of any connection re Amsterdam. (Where by the way my business partner's husband fled from Vienna to as a child..)

edit to say, now there's some miserable grammar..

It is Mauthausen. Anne Franks father was sent there and actually survived. Another survivor was my Ex-father-in-law Ludwig Fialka, who was there for five years and from whom I heard many stories. My ex-wife was from Vienna and as a child of five or so, was allowed to approach the jail cell and be hugged by her father as he got the tobacco out of her pocket.

Looks almost like 'squares' found in Spain like Plaza Mayor in Madrid. Not familiar with circular block patterns such as your picture, but I would assume it could be in Scandinavia - but you are a Italy-phile.
