Since there isn't anything to see I would guess that it's historical significance is something to do with native americans possibly or a civil ding dong perhaps.

This is the Little Big Horn Battlefield in Montana, but about a mile or so away from the last stand. Specifically, this is "Medicine Tail Coulee", the point at which Custer's column first met native resistance, then were backed to Last Stand Hill. The Indian encampment would have been on the far side of this river. Last Stand Hill is behind you from this viewpoint.
