There are many justifications for each ideology in politics, ranging from left to right. However, one particular instance has always puzzled me, that how can one use his intuitive reason to reconcile fiscal and social conservatism in one system of ideas: first, fiscal conservatism rests on the premise of a small government with limited powers, since less spending means government can do less things, yet social conservatism argues for more government control. If we apply reason, a conservative, fiscal and social combined, if he cuts down spending, all that control-freat social con laws would be crippled; if he unleashes socially repressive laws on sex, drugs, and others, spending hikes. How can one reasonably believe government should expand on one side but shrink on another? anyone can give a thoughtful answer to this?
