Kill ugly radio . . .

was a quote from Frank Zappa that I had written on something I used while in college. But radio was so promising in those days. "Underground radio" was sprouting across the nation in those days before consultants.

I've been working in retail for a long time. For some reason, stores all have sound tracks. The store where I currently work subscribes to Sirius radio. I am not impressed. I worked at the branch that sticks to classic rock and last night's feature seemed to be a Young Rascals' reunion concert . . . on a continuous loop . . . three hours of unvarying music at a too loud volume.

I have not been able to explore what is on the dial at Sirius but what I have heard is disappointing.

I gave up on radio ages ago. In the Florida panhandle it's that sickening Limbaugh and locals just like him. As for music radio, it's the pits. Even with all the stations one can get via the internet, it stinks. I have an assortment of music cds.....Radio is for the birds as far as I am concerned.

The good news is that I read an article yesterday in which Limbaugh claims he lives in fear for his life. I doubt that this is true but if it is it could not happen to a more deserving person (and I use the word person very loosly when talking about that disgusting piece of human excrement).

@djjd62,
Terrestrial radio is actually pretty good. During my commute to work, which is 70 miles each way, I listen to two different public radio stations: WFCR and WUMB. The former presents public radio news and news magazines along with classical music while the latter has just recently transformed from folk/acoustic to acoustic/adult contemporary. Of course, that does not mean I stand everything they present . . . a good CD player is a commuter's best friend.

@Magginkat,
I once worked with someone recently arrived from Puerto Rico who played Limbaugh in the stockroom. The manager asked him to discontinue the practice. I mentioned that story to a friend who said that had never considered the lopsided view of American life that a recent immigrant might get from listening to the radio.

A Houston talk show host got in trouble last week for saying, "I hope it gets blown up," about the mosque being placed in view of ground zero, NYC. While I find it in bad taste to put one on that site, inflammatory talk from such people can well incite someone to make the attempt. There goes more innocent life, hate and disruption.

@edgarblythe,
Let's hope the mosque becomes something of a peace center. While that might be unrealistic . . . well . . . hope is all that remained in Pandora's box.

I listen to the CBC and N.Americas oldest running public radio station. It's called CKUA, you can find it on the net. It's great!
The Dj's actually program their own shows. During the week, during the day and late night, it's a mix of everything musical, but they rarely play top 40 anything... On the weekends and in the evening they are a series of programs, celtic, jazz, jazz vocals, classical, choral, blues, big band, poetry etc.
I can't listen to normal radio, the hosts shout constantly, too many commercials and so much repetition...

This Vancouver station is superb. In S Florida I only listen to NPR on the local college campus.

Shoud ALL immigrants be controlled by CENSORSHIP, Plain??

Maybe just let them listen to socialist radio?

@Ceili,
Wow! The djs programming their own shows! A return to the good old days when you could rely on and relate to the taste of the individual presenting the music. I listened to Odyssey, a Sunday afternoon program that Dana Westover presents on WUMB, yesterday. Westover is a great teacher. There may be shows he does that contain music you can't stand but, boy, do you learn from him and he expands your musical horizons.

I, too, dislike "shout radio."
