Casinos in Massachusetts?

Thoughts on casinos and slots in Mass or in your state/neighborhood/location for that matter...

This just passed the House in Mass. for 2 casinos and racetrack slot machines. Personally I am not a gambler - not that I haven't gone to a casino, I simply get bored with gambling and don't get a thrill from it. I have no issue with a casino - I've been to Moghegan Sun in CT. Its nice (other than the smoking) and I don't see the negatives.

Much better and nicer than individuals that go down to the local 7-11 and playing Keno. Why is ok to have Keno, but not Casinos? I understand that gambling can be addicition that is the con, but don't you have to be an adult to gamble? You can get addicted to almost anything?

the first amerind casino to establish legal authority to so was I undertand "Sandia Casino" in ablaturkey New mexico. It is now a major resort area with a hotel, golf course, major music venue and gambling. I'm guessing it has been an asset to our city.

@Linkat,
I play poker and would love to have a casino game that is closer than the two hour drive to Foxwoods. Poker is more of a mental game, unlike mindless diversions like Keno.

Should a casino come to Palmer, MA it will ruin live music in Northampton, MA.

Worked with an anti-Casino group in Hull MA in 1981. We went around and showed a film on how Atlantic City was impacted by the introduction of a Casino. The local environment was pretty much detroyed. Work did go to residents of Atlantic City. Crime rates rose. on and on.

We kept them out.

Atlantic City was at one time was a laid back summer resort, with wonderful old wooden boardwalks, pleasant beaches. A great family vacation.

The introduction of a Casino destroyed all that.

The anti-gambling thing is another expression of our Puritan roots.

There is no more evidence of an increase in crime from casinos then there is from any other tourist attraction that brings in lots of people. There was a similar increase in crime when Disney world opened. I think the threat to local business and arts establishments is a valid concern... but again this is no different then any other tourist attraction. And of course there are benefits, including people who enjoy casinos.

There are plenty of people who enjoy Atlantic City.

If I had my way Gambling would only be legal in Vegas and Atlantic City, and sex work would be legal everywhere. There is nothing beneficial to the collective about gambling, sex workers however provide a valuable service.

@plainoldme,
Sure, and there are plenty of people who want to ban beer and dancing on Sunday.

((personally I would just ban hyperbole))

@plainoldme,
And what do you have against B&D? I thought by now we were past worrying about what other people do in the bedroom (as long as it isn't poker of course).

@Thomas,
Out west there are casinos just about everywhere (indian reservations, even California allows them)....it doesn't seem to hurt Vegas too bad.

This seems to be an East Coast phobia.

@Linkat,
Let's be realistic about these so called tribal run casinos. Some journalists did a deep investigation on those running the casino sometime back in the 1990's. The people who were allowed to qualify as say being a part of the Mohegan tribe for instance thusly qualify to run the enormous tax free gambling institution were a mere 1/16 Mohegan Indian blood and genetic wise.

Let's not fool ourselves into thinking the actual tribes and actual members of these tribes actually get any benefit from these billion dollar treasure chests.

I apologize for not being able to provide the source to the referred news article.

@tsarstepan,
No need to apologize. I remember a similar article and I am certain others do as well.

@maporsche,
It's actually called irony -- big, up-and-coming thing on the East Coast; you Chicago folks will hear of it soon.

I think it really depends on where you put the casino. When a casino was built in downtown New Orleans, it sucked up all the tourists who go to the casino early, eat meals there and stay late. It ended up depressing all the local businesses. Putting casinos in depressed areas or in out of the way places seems like it could be a win.

@engineer,
I want a casino within a 30-45 minute drive from Boston. It doesn't do much good if people can't get to it easily.

@engineer,
There is talk of locating it in Palmer, MA. Such location would kill the music business is Northampton, MA.

@Sglass,
I think this is different than Atlantic City - not talking about a whole strip of casinos, but more a resort/casino like Mohigan Sun. Much rather have that than our current Keno crap.

Wonder what the stats are on Mohegin Sun?
